Japanese teenager Marin Minamiya has already conquered Mount Everest and the highest peaks on six other continents, plus a journey to the South Pole.

Wow! At only 19 that's amazing. I climbed (more
like hiked) a few "14ers" in Colorado. The first ti
me, I got altitude sickness at the 11,000 foot leve
l and had to stop

Bloody heck that's some going. All 7 in under 2
years, and Elbrus and Everest in the space of a
week? The main thing required for this, even mor
e important than determination, is a massive bud
get. She must be loaded! I doubt her single menti
oned clothing sponsor covers all that much of the
total cost.

As for it saying she climbed Elbrus in winter and
Everest 2 days later, that seems most unlikely - a
winter ascent of either is an extremely serious pr
ospect, especially Everest, with an extremely hig
h chance of proving fatal to even a highly skilled
and experienced climber. I suspect that hasn't be
en accurately reported.

But with those two points made, very well done
Marin and good luck for the final goal.

I think it probably means she started climbing tw
o days later, and that's probably two days after s
he completed her descent. Everest cannot be cli
mbed in two days.

It doesn't say she summited Everest two days aft
er summiting Elbus, it says:

“I had one week to climb this mountain ..." (Elbus
)

And two days later she was scaling Everest in N
epal.

What an extraordinary woman. I hear she grew u
p in Hong Kong & Malaysia and had quite an inte
rnational upbringing. She certainly seems quite f
earless, what a future she has ahead of her.

Explorers Grand Slam

The Explorers Grand Slam is an adventurers cha
llenge to reach the north and south pole and clim
b the Seven Summits.

The original concept involved the polar trips starti
ng from accepted coastal points, involving long sl
edging journeys. Over time the significantly short
er, easier and less serious 'Last Degree' polar tri
ps - from 89 degrees to the pole (at 90 degrees)
- have been claimed as the Explorers Grand Sla
m (Last Degree). Currently, the climbing commun
ity and other leading organizations including the
American Alpine Club, The Explorers Club, climb
ing companies such as International Mountain G
uides, and the popular press all define the Explor
ers Grand Slam as having accomplished the Sev
en Summits plus (at a minimum - the last degree
of) the North and South Poles.
