J-rock is a direct off-shoot of Alternative Rock which emerged from Japan during the late 20th century. J-rock was first introduced as a marketing term to categorize popular rock bands from Japan, however, it further developed as an elaborate style. For example, J-rock grew directly from the Visual kei scene, which originally took influence from older-schooled genres like Heavy Metal and Glam Rock. However, during the 1990s there were bands who branched off from the classic sound and evolved like hide, Luna Sea and early L' Arc~en~Ciel who were crucial to J-rock. Musically, J-rock draws from detailed and somewhat complex musical progression with defined J-Pop structures and related sensibilities, such as featuring energetic power chords and distinct melodic-driven leads. It often features Western popular musical traits ranging from Pop Rock, Power Pop, Indie Rock, Math Rock, Noise Pop to various contemporary Punk styles. Nearing the start of the J-rock music scene, bands like Bump of Chicken started to formulate their recognizable sound to the arising rock scene in Japan. Most famously being B'z who had nation-wide success, having as many as 86 million records sold in Japan. In addition, Supercar are considered one of the most important bands to J-rock, specifically with release スリーアウトチェンジ (Three Out Change!!) influencing numerous J-rock bands to come. In 1997, Fuji Rock Festival opened a gateway for emerging indie/alternative bands from Japan, other festivals like Rising Sun Rock Festival and Rock in Japan Festival started to open later on as well.
