Japan will bring a young, domestic-based squad to the WBC this season in defense of their title.
The only winners of the previous two WBC tournaments, Japan, this time around,
features no active MLB players. However, the starting rotation has a very impressive resume.
Masahiro Tanaka tops the starting staff with a 75-35 record, 2.50 ERA and 1,055 strikeouts in four seasons with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.
Kenta Maeda of the Hiroshima Carp, Tadashi Settsu of the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks,
Tetsuya Utsumi, the 2012 Japan Series MVP, and Toshiya Sugiuchi of the Yomiuri Giants will also be pitching in.
While this quartet may not have experience playing on American soil,
they are more than ready to show the rest of the world that they are capable of leading Japan to a third straight WBC title.

He’s three games into the Major League Baseball Cactus League season with his Seattle Mariners, but Michael Saunders is keen to what lies just around the corner.
“I can’t wait. I’m really excited about it,”
Saunders said over the phone just days into Mariners’ spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona.
“I’m a Mariner first, but I’m looking forward to representing my country. I haven’t put on a Canadian uniform in quite some time.
“Getting to represent your country is a definite honour, a proud moment,” he added.
“Some guys, for health reasons or contract reasons, aren’t able to play.
But, overall, it’s the best players of each country representing their country and it should be great competition.”

Scully was at the facility for the Dodgers’ first television broadcast of the spring.
“I’d love to see him,” Piazza said.
