冒頭の‘Nobody’をperson of no consequenceと比喩的に取ることもできるが、
それは‘Who are you?’の答えにもなるのだから単なる否定辞（no-something）ではない
（‘Then _there's_ a pair of us!’）。
一方、‘Somebody’であることは‘dreary’（i.e. dull and depressing）でcommonであると見なされ、
逆に‘Nobody’であることの方がsingularな価値を獲得している。
無名の読者との間に結ばれた密かなcommunion/complicity（‘Don't tell!’）が世俗的なpublicityに勝るわけだが、
あたかも生前のobscurityを静かに受け入れる態度をparadox（‘I'm Nobody.
!’）の大胆な形式で表現して、
Dickinsonの最もpopularな詩の一つ。
