The Chancellor’s increase in the banking levy threatens to spark a City exodus
Everyone knows the story, resonant as it is with moral indignation and
famously portrayed by El Greco in his painting, Cleansing of the Temple .
Here’s the account from John 2:13-16 “In the temple he found those who were
selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers at their business.
And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out
of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and
overturned their tables.
And he told those who sold the doves, ‘Take these
things away; you shall not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
Few UK politicians I’ve ever come across seriously think that getting rid of
the City money changers altogether in punishment for the financial crisis
makes much sense; the bankers may be loathed and blamed, but they are also
far too important a source of tax revenue to want to drive them out
completely.
