Thermo Trilogy Corporation (Columbia, MD) and its parent Thermo Electron Corporation have reached agreement with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. of Japan for the sales of all the assets of Thermo Trilogy to Certis USA L.L.C., (a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui), for an undisclosed sum. The sale is expected to be completed by the end of April, 2001. Thermo Trilogy is a leading manufacturer of biological crop protection products including Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt), neem oil, viruses, pheromones and nematodes. The company operates production facilities in Wasco, California, Decatur, Illinois, and Cardiff, U.K. Sales for the last fiscal year ending September 30, 2000 were $29.8 M. Mitsui is a Tokyo-based global "general" trading firm with sales of $130 billion. The company has been engaged in the marketing and distribution of diverse products including agrochemicals and biologicals, which are handled directly and through its European marketing subsidiaries. Its recognition of the growing interest in food safety and traceability, and its emphasis on an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach led to the purchase in 1999 of Biological Crop Protection (BCP), a UK based manufacturer of beneficial insects and mites. Mitsui feels that the purchase of Thermo Trilogy's assets by Certis USA L.L.C. will greatly strengthen its ability to develop and market worldwide IPM solutions in the high value specialty crop areas.
