【ワシントン＝海谷道隆】米共和党上院トップのミッチ・マコネル院内総務は１５日、
議会で演説し、１４日に行われた大統領選の選挙人投票を受け、バイデン次期大統領への
祝意を表明した。１１月７日に大統領選の大勢が判明してから１か月以上を経て、ようや
くバイデン氏を「次期大統領」と公式に認めた。敗北を認めていないトランプ大統領の孤
立はいっそう深まった。
選挙人投票では、バイデン氏が当選に必要な過半数の票を獲得した。マコネル氏は「大統
領選が異なる結果となることを望んだが、我々の統治体制には誰が大統領に就任するかを
決めるプロセスがある」とした上で、「本日、バイデン氏に祝意を表したい」と述べた。
マコネル氏は、トランプ氏には選挙結果に異議を唱える権利があるとし、バイデン氏の勝
利を認めてこなかった。重鎮のマコネル氏が勝利容認に転じたことで、共和党内でバイデ
ン氏を次期大統領と認める動きが進む可能性が高い。
バイデン氏は記者団に、マコネル氏に電話で謝意を伝えたと明かし、「我々は多くのこと
で意見は異なるが、協力できる分野もある」と語った。早期に会談することでも一致した

the Times.
McGown also called out the White House for its treatment of Dr. Nancy Messonnier,
who angered Trump this past February when she publicly acknowledged that the novel
coronavirus would become a major public health crisis.
“There’s not a single thing that she said that didn’t come true,” McGowan said.
“Is it more important to have her telling the world and the American public what
to be prepared for, or is it just to say, ‘All is well?’”

●1950年代の「赤狩り」の記憶
その答えが将来の米国政治の方向性を形作っていく。ホフスタッターの考察は、安心で
きる方向と心配になる方向の両方を指し示している。
1950年代に数年にわたって米国の政治、メディア、学界、エンターテインメント業界
を震撼させたジョセフ・マッカーシーの「赤の恐怖」（反共ヒステリー）を見た後、ホ

Majority” rallies in support of GOP Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. He is
scheduled to visit the state again on Thursday for campaign stops in Macon and Columbus.
The two races, slated for Jan. 5, will determine which party controls the Senate.
“He’s still helping out where asked by the [Trump] campaign, but the biggest help
is him being in Georgia,” a senior White House official said of the vice president’s
schedule.
