Former acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney on Wednesday slammed Rudy
Giuliani’s leadership of the Trump campaign’s election-related legal challenges,
saying that the effort to reverse the presidential race’s outcome “is not a
television program” and should be handled by more experienced attorneys.
“I’m still a little concerned about the use of Rudy Giuliani. It strikes me that
this is the most important lawsuit in the history of the country, and they’re
not using the most well-noted election lawyers,” Mulvaney, who served as President
Donald Trump’s top aide from January 2019-March 2020, told Fox Business.

Over the weekend, Giuliani and his own team of lawyers, which also includes
Trump campaign legal adviser Jenna Ellis, attempted what was described to ABC
News as an internal campaign "coup"? an attempt to wrestle power away from the
current longstanding Trump campaign leadership by claiming the president had
given them full control moving forward, multiple sources said.
The attempted power grab hit a boiling point on Saturday when Miller, who’s
been the campaign's chief strategist for months, and Ellis got into what sources
said was a "screaming match" in front of other staffers. They both threatened to
call the president to settle who he wanted to be in charge, sources said. At one
point, Miller berated Ellis and called her “crazy,” multiple sources said.

Legal experts were heavily skeptical of the Trump campaign’s arguments in the
Pennsylvania case after it was first filed, and the lawsuit was amended after a
federal appeals court struck down some of the campaign’s central legal arguments
in a separate case. The case will now largely focus on allegations concerning the
fact that some Pennsylvania counties allowed voters to fix issues with their mail-in
ballots while others decided not to, though Giuliani has been vocal about other
baseless allegations regarding Pennsylvania’s election process, suggesting the
attorney could bring up other issues during the hearing.
KEY BACKGROUND
The Pennsylvania lawsuit is part of a broader effort by Trump and the GOP to
challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s win in battleground states. Despite yielding
one minor win in a Pennsylvania mail-in voting case, the legal challenges have so
far largely failed, however, and election law experts do not believe at this point
that Trump has a chance of success. “There is no path,” election law expert Rick
Hasen wrote on his blog Monday. “Rudy Giuliani can say what he wants and the
President can keep declaring that he’s won, but there’s no plausible legal way
this election gets overturned.”

WASHINGTON ? Forget Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Or Trump’s
impeachment for asking Ukraine to dig up dirt on Joe Biden.
Arguably the biggest political scandal we’ve ever seen in this country is playing
right before our eyes: President Trump and his allies are trying to reverse the
election results of a contest he lost.

In Pennsylvania ? which Biden won by more than 82,000 votes ? Trump lawyer Rudy
Giuliani was in court asking a judge to overturn the state’s results. (“At
bottom, you’re asking this court to invalidate some 6.8 million votes thereby
disenfranchising every single voter in the commonwealth,” the judge said.)

And to top it off, the president on Tuesday fired the federal government’s head
of cybersecurity, who had debunked many of the conspiracy theories that Trump’s

Bottom line: Trump’s efforts to overturn the election have stumbled and gained no
significant traction yet. But it’s still disturbing to watch, especially with so
many elected Republicans staying silent.
