He enters a dangerous second-week period during which patients with Covid-19 can quickly worsen

Doctors not involved in Mr. Trump’s treatment said he was still at risk and that
a Monday discharge would be atypical for a patient with his characteristics and
risk factors, including age, gender, and weight.
“The most atypical feature of his discharge is captured in the words of his
physician who warned that the president could face a relapse in coming days,”
said Daniel Griffin, chief of infectious diseases at ProHealth Care New York.
“It is not typical to discharge a patient with severe COVID during the second
week,“ a dangerous period, he added.
Doctors define severe Covid-19 cases as those needing supplemental oxygen.

【ワシントン】ドナルド・トランプ米大統領は5日夜、ウォルター・リード軍医療センター
を退院し、ホワイトハウスに戻った。だが、医師団は3日間にわたり入院していたトランプ
氏の予後を警戒している。また、大統領選投票日を1カ月後に控える中、補佐官らの間で
新型コロナウイルス感染が相次いでいる。
トランプ氏は退院に先立ち、「本当に調子が良い！COVIDを恐れるな」とツイート。
「COVIDに支配されてはならない。われわれはトランプ政権下で極めて素晴らしい治療薬
を開発し、知識も蓄えた」として、「20年前よりも調子がいい」と述べた。
だがトランプ氏周辺の関係者の間では感染が広がっており、ホワイトハウスのケイリー・
マクナニー報道官は、検査で感染が確認されたことを明らかにした。
マクナニー氏はトランプ氏の感染が発覚した1日以降、「検査では一貫して陰性結果が出
ていたにもかかわらず」、陽性反応が出たとし、自己隔離を始めると述べた。
トランプ氏が再発する可能性については、「トランプ氏のように早い段階でこれら治療を
受けた患者という意味では、ある程度は未知の領域だといえる」と述べ、「この週末を注
視している。月曜まで現状維持か、それ以上に改善することができれば、われわれは心か
ら安堵（あんど）のため息をつけるだろう」と続けた。
コンリー氏はトランプ氏が3日にも酸素吸入を受けたと初めて明らかにした。医師団はこ
れまで、2日午前に吸入を受けたとだけ明らかにしていた。トランプ氏の血中酸素飽和度
はその際、ともに低下していたという。
医師団はトランプ氏のコロナ検査で最後に陰性結果が出たのはいつかや、同氏の肺スキャ
ンに肺炎の兆候があったかなどについてはコメントを控えている。

During his 2016 campaign, the president made revitalizing the coal industry a
large part of his populist appeal in the all-important Rust Belt, even though
coal has been displaced by natural gas in recent years with Foreign Policy
reporting, “Natural gas is today the biggest single source of fuel for America’s
power plants.”
Nonetheless, the president pushed coal (“Trump digs coal”) while claiming,
“We’re going to put our miners back to work.”
As the Times notes, the president opened the doors to coal industry insiders to
join his administration, reporting, “Despite Mr. Trump stocking his administration
with coal-industry executives and lobbyists, taking big donations from the
industry, rolling back environmental regulations and intervening directly in cases
like the Arizona power plant and mine, coal’s decline has only accelerated in
recent years.”
That failure has not gone unnoticed by the workers who voted for Trump.
“Arizona is now an electoral battleground for Mr. Trump. But the economic trauma
from coal’s rapid collapse extends to Kentucky and other coal-mining states.
After the shutdown of coal-fueled power producers like the Paradise Fossil Plant
in western Kentucky, the Genesis Mine in Centertown, Ky., laid off its 250 workers
in late February.”
