Now, perhaps for the first time, it seems the US president may have lost the room.
Trump’s sixth sense for striking populist notes appears to have deserted him in
the wake of the death of George Floyd, an African American man killed when a
white Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes,
sparking Black Lives Matter protests nationwide.
Over the last three weeks the president has found himself on the wrong side of
public opinion ? and history ? on everything from police reform to symbols of
the Confederacy which fought a civil war to preserve slavery 150 years ago.
Even a sport synonymous with his base, Nascar (National Association for Stock
Car Auto Racing), is on a different wavelength having banned the Confederate
flag from its events.

director on Capitol Hill, said: “Anyone who knows the history of this country
has to acknowledge that systemic racism is the original American sin.
“There is a considerable amount of Donald Trump’s base that harbours these

He began his entire campaign with the baseless racist birtherism charge against
Obama and going after Mexicans as rapists and criminals and he is ginning up
that sentiment. There’s a reason why the racists and white supremacists of
this country support Donald Trump. Why is that?”

stunning. Unlike same-sex marriage, it isn't a result of reframing
(religion/morality → civil rights/equal protection). Something else is going on.

The protest movement over black injustice has quickly spread deep into predominantly
white, small-town America, notably throughout parts of the country that delivered
the presidency for Donald Trump. Across Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,
more than 200 such demonstrations have taken place, many in cities with fewer than
20,000 residents, according to local media, organizers, participants and the online
tracking tool CrowdCount.
“That’s what’s so striking, that these protests are taking place in rural places
with a white nationalist presence,” said Lynn Tramonte, who grew up near Mount
Vernon and is monitoring the Black Lives Matter demonstrations around Ohio.
The protests in these Republican-leaning areas offer a test of the president’s
ability to reassemble his older, white voting bloc. If he cannot replicate that
coalition, it would leave Trump with few options, especially since he continues
to lose support in suburbs.
“If President Trump cannot hold onto white, working-class voters in rural,
small-town Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio, I don’t know how he wins
the election,” said Terry Madonna, director of the Center for Public Affairs
at Franklin & Marshall College, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “Can you rule out
he won’t have that same level of enthusiasm? No, you can’t.”

レスリー・バストンさん（４２）は先週末に首都ワシントンで、白人警官の暴行のため
黒人男性ジョージ・フロイドさんが亡くなった事件に抗議する数千人規模のデモ行進に
参加した。一緒に参加した９歳と１１歳の子供たちが、我が家はなぜ何もしないのかと
尋ねたからだという。
バストンさんは６日、「非白人で社会の現状から恩恵を受けられない人たちの発言力を
高めるのを助けようという、私なりの取り組みだ」と話した。
実際最近になって、全米各地の都市や小さな町で、白人が「黒人の命は大切」と書かれ
たＴシャツを身に着け、手製のプラカードを掲げながら「手を上げるんだ。撃つな」と
叫んで練り歩いている。時には、フロイドさんが警官に首を押さえ込まれ呼吸ができず
に苦しんだことを悼み、皆で路上に横たわる場面も見られる。

米国の公民権運動への白人の参加は昔から見られたが、歴史学者や社会学者は、足元で

ローズ大学の歴史学准教授チャールズ・マッキニー氏は「歴史を振り返ると、今年のよ
うにさまざまな運動で白人の参加率が高まっても、抗議デモが沈静化していくと白人は
運動から徐々に脱落していく」と話す。
かつての黒人公民権運動では、１９６５年にアラバマ州セルマで「血の日曜日事件」
（デモ隊が警官隊に弾圧され死傷者を出した事件）が起きた際にピュー研究所が行った
調査によると、デモ隊に共感する割合は、全米規模では州内の２倍に上っていた。
ところが当時の別の調査では、デモ隊が求めた黒人の参政権獲得や人種差別措置の撤廃
について、ジョンソン政権の進め方が急過ぎると考える国民も、４５％に達していた。
マッキニー氏は、今年の白人層の動きが「黒人の命は大切」運動を現実的に後押しする
ような法整備につながるかを分析中だ。
人権団体の連合組織幹部を務める元外交官のアリン・ブルックス・ラシュア氏は、フロ
イドさんの事件を限りにして人種間の分断を終わらせるには、白人側が単に傍観者的な
立場から同情するのでなく、この問題を全面的に自分たちの責任として引き受ける必要
があると訴えた。
＜新世代＞
「黒人市民運動に関する全米連合」のメラニー・キャンベル事務局長は、ベテラン運動
家の間では、白人を巻き込んだこの流れが長期間続くことに懐疑論があると述べた。
それでも、フロイドさんの事件後に噴出した怒りや不満のレベルは、かつてないほどだ
とも認める。
キャンベル氏は、学校で多数が銃撃される事件や分断をあおる大統領、黒人が人種的理
由で殺される光景を目にしている世代が、反対の声を上げているとの見方を示した。
