[FT]米消費者激変、企業に人種問題での立場表明を迫る

ブランド企業が今、消費者から人種差別についての意見表明を迫られている。黒人男性
のジョージ・フロイドさんが警官に殺害された事件をきっかけに、多くの企業が長年避
けてきたこのテーマについて、米国の消費者の態度が急速に変化したことが複数の世論
調査で明らかになった。
■6割が企業の事件への反応で購買決定
PRコンサルティング会社エデルマンが9日に公表した調査によると、米国人の約6割が今、
フロイドさんの殺害に対する企業の反応に基づいて、ブランドをボイコットするか、そ
の商品を買うかを決めるという。
この変化を先導するのは、企業がマーケティングで重要なターゲットとしている若く、
多様で、購買力の高い消費者だ。黒人消費者の8割、18〜34歳の消費者層の7割、そして
女性の63%が、それに基づいて購買の意思決定をするという。また、エデルマンの調査で
は、事件に対する立場を表明した企業が消費者の信頼を得る確率は、信頼を失う確率の
4倍にのぼることが分かった。
「米国のマーケティングでは人種問題は触れてはならないもので、企業はこれまで避け
てきた」とリチャード・エデルマン最高経営責任者（CEO）は語る。米国の消費者は今、
気候変動のような争点よりも人種問題に強い関心を抱いているという。調査は、6月5〜
7日に2000人を対象に実施された。
米調査会社モーニング・コンサルトが先週公表した調査結果もエデルマンの結果に符合
する。この調査では、最近の抗議活動について企業がなんらコメントしなかった場合、
黒人および白人米国人の過半数がそのブランドの評価を下げることが分かった。

査専門家のフランク・ランツ氏は8日、警察の暴力に対する態度の変わりようについて、
この35年間の世論調査のなかで、これほど急激に世論が変化したのは初めての経験だと述べた。
ランツ氏は、「ほんの30日前と今とで、違う国になってしまった」とツイートした。
「ビートルズが『エド・サリバン・ショー』に出演した時並みのインパクトだ」
これらの調査結果は企業にとって難しい課題を提起する。というのも世論は、企業の幹
部の人種構成から最低賃金水準まで、人種間の平等に対する企業のコミットメントが本
物かどうかを慎重に見極めようとしているためだ。
「ブラック・ライブス・マター（黒人の命は大切だ）」運動の活動家で、警察改革を推
進する団体「キャンペーン・ゼロ」の共同創設者のディレイ・マケッソン氏は先週、企
業が社会変革を求めるロビー行動ではなく、「インスタグラムへの投稿や寄付のばらま
きなど、より安易な道を選ぶ」ことに対して警鐘を鳴らした。
■「避けるべき」テーマから「避けられない」テーマに
「これまでブランドの物語伝えるのに政治的な問題を避けて安全策を取ってきた企業は、
今それをやったら、ネガティブな評価を受ける可能性が高い」。米ハーバード大学経営
大学院のマーケティング部門のシニアレクチャラー、ジル・エイブリー氏はこう語る。
だが、「消費者の見る目は厳しく、日和見主義、搾取的、あるいは偽善的なブランド運
営を見極めようとしている」と付け加えている。
エデルマンの調査では、調査対象の63%が、搾取的、日和見主義にならないためには、
企業は表明したスタンスを具体的な行動で裏づけることを望んでいることが明らかになった。
エデルマン氏は、ブランドにとってリスクバランスは、人種問題の論争に加わるのは危
険という従来の考えから沈黙を続けるのはリスクが高いという方向にシフトしたという。
企業のCEOの間で、社会が分断されてより不安定になっていることに懸念が強まっている
ことに関連しているという。

PHOENIX ? Three weeks after Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey lifted his stay-at-home order,
the state has seen a big spike in the number of coronavirus cases.
With nearly 1,100 dead and hospitalizations spiking rapidly, lawmakers and medical
professionals are warning there might not be enough emergency room beds to handle
what could be a big influx of new cases.
More than 1,500 new cases were reported along with 25 new deaths in the past 24
hours, officials said.
While Ducey has insisted this “is not a crisis situation” and suggested the rise
in the number of cases is due to an increase in testing, critics say otherwise
and accuse the Republican governor of setting a bad example by not wearing a mask
while out in public.
“Our hospitals are sounding the alarm. We’re hearing that the hospitals lack the
ICU capacity needed to deal with this and key equipment needed to treat people.”
Marcy Flanagan, director of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, echoed
Butler’s concern during a press conference last week.
“We’re starting to see some indicators that the number of COVID-19 cases is
increasing in Maricopa County and we have enough information to know these increases
are not due to just an increase in testing that is occurring,”
